QA & Ballooning for manufacturers

A short primer on how to auto-balloon drawings and generate inspection sheets.

As a manufacturer, you want to have faster RFQs and inspections. Much of this depends on your ability to process drawings faster. This guide will show you how to balloon drawings, redact sensitive information, and generate inspection sheets with Lens.

Traditionally, you would use a PDF editing application to manually balloon and redline technical drawings. These tools aren't designed for drawings, and therefore makes for a slow and error-prone process.

Auto-ballooning

Upload your drawing, and the AI will automatically detect most dimensions, features, and GD&T in the file. On the right is a sidebar showing all the detected dimensions. You'll also see buttons to delete, edit, or add new dimensions:

You can also reposition the balloons by clicking and dragging them:

Once you're happy with the results, you can download the ballooned drawing from the sidebar.

Generate inspection sheets

To ensure that the parts are manufactured correctly, manufacturers will need to maintain an inspection sheet for every drawing. This sheet mentions every notable feature in the drawing, along with their minimum and maximum acceptable values.

To generate an inspection sheet, make sure you've gone through every dimension in the drawing and verified that the tolerances and values are correct. You can verify a dimension by clicking the checkbox that shows up when you click on it:

Once you've verified all dimensions, you can generate the inspection sheet by clicking the 'Inspection Sheet' button in the sidebar:

Lens also lets you auto-generate other FAI documents, such as the AS9102 part information form. Information like part name, number, and revision is auto-filled in the sheet.

Hide information

When sending drawings to suppliers or sub-contractors, you often need to obscure sensitive information. This may include parts of the title-block, stamps, signatures, or the foundry logo. By default, lens will auto-detect some of this information and show a dark box over them.

You can also manually add or delete redactions. These parts will be blurred when the drawing is downloaded from the sidebar:
